General Competition

  • Competitors have 60 seconds to report to the table when called or risk a forfeiture

  • Nothing shall be worn on the competing hand, wrist, arm or elbow during matches. No substance of any kind can be present on the hand or wrist, except chalk. Any violation can result in disqualification. 

  • In the event of a bleeding injury, a competitor MUST stop the bleeding to the referee’s satisfaction. Use of a Band-Aid or a piece of tape the size of a Band-Aid on the wound is allowed. 

  • Any competitor exhibiting impairment due to alcohol, drugs or otherwise, may be disqualified from the competition.

IMPORTANT

  • **You may only qualify in ONE Men's (money) Pro Weight Class per qualifier. If you attend more than one qualifier and qualify in more than one weight class, you may only compete in ONE Men's (money) Pro weight class in the finals of your choice however you must make weight to compete in the class.**

  • **Athletes can pull in multiple Amateur, Women's or Masters Medal classes.**

Weight Classes
Right & Left Hand

  • Men (Pro & AM) – 0-176,  177-209,  210-239,  240+; 

  • Women (All Levels) – 0-154,  155-185,  186+

  • Masters 50+  <210,  211+

  • Weigh-in Rules

    You can enter up to four weight divisions in the REGIONALS ONLY - You are only allowed to compete in one weight division in the finals

  • If a competitor does not make weight for their intended class, they can compete in the next class up.

  • In the case of a low turnout, competitors can opt to enter an Open, Masters, or Women’s (for women) weight class.

  • Competitors can only weigh in during posted times.

    There is a 2 pound clothing allowance.

  • Any individual attempting to alter their weight will be disqualified. 

Rules for slipping out of the grip

  • If a referee determines a slip was intentional, competitors will be put back in the set grip (No strap). 

  • If a referee determines a slip was Unintentional, competitors will be put in the straps. 

  • After a slip, before taking their grip, competitors must set their competing elbow on the elbow pad, square their shoulders, and present an open arm.

The Grip

  • Competitors must keep their non-pulling hand in contact with the peg at all times during the match.

  • Competitors must heed the instructions and commands of the head referee.

  • Competitors must set their competing elbow on the elbow pad, square their shoulders, and present an open arm.

  • When setting the grip, the angle of the competing arm must result in the fingers pointing at their opponent. 

  • The referee will center the hands on the table. The webbing between the thumb and the index finger of the hand of each competitor will be level, close, and tightly set

  • Competitors’ hands must be palm-to-palm, flat together and with no separation, at the referee’s discretion and satisfaction. 

  • The referee may hold the competitors’ fingers while he gives the command “Close your thumbs.”

  • The referee may ask each competitor whether they wish to “wrap” or not “wrap” their thumbs.

  • Competitors must keep their wrists straight when closing their thumbs and hands.

  • Competitors will not be allowed to “carve” their wrists in the set up.

  • When closing the hand, the referee must see each competitor’s thumb knuckle.

  • The referee will give the command “READY … GO” to start the match. 

Fouls

  • A competitor receiving any 3 fouls will result in a loss. 

  • Any movement of the hand, wrist, arm, or shoulder (including a false start), prior to “GO” and after “Close your hands” will result in a foul.

  • A competitor touching any part of their body (chin, shoulder or head) to the competing hands will result in a foul. 

  • Any part of the elbow or arm losing contact with the top of the elbow pad at any time during the match will result in a foul.

  • If a competitor attempts to delay a match by not staying at the table.

  • Poor sportsmanship may result in a foul. Continued conduct after warnings can result in the competitor’s removal from the event and/or forfeiture of any placements and awards.

  • Losing contact with the peg with the non-competing hand. 

  • Intentionally moving your opponent off center after “Close your hands” – example: Back pressure. 

  • Competitors cannot drop the competing shoulder below the level of the elbow pad when in a neutral, winning, or losing position. 

  • A slip deemed intentional by the referee in a losing position will be deemed a loss.

  • A slip deemed unintentional by the referee in a losing position will go to the strap. 

  • Any simultaneous fouls by both competitors will result in Stop/ Restart with no fouls.

Re-Start Foul System

IMPORTANT: NEVER STOP ARM WRESTLING UNTIL A REFEREE STOPS THE MATCH

  • Fouls will be announced during the match, but DO NOT STOP ARM WRESTLING. The Referee will stop the match by coming to the table and stating “Stop”.

  • If a position is close to causing a foul, in order to correct a position, a Referee may warn a competitor during the match. i.e. “WATCH YOUR ELBOW”. However, the referee is not obligated to do so.

The Pin

  • Touching any portion of the opponent’s wrist to fingertips to the pin pad is constituted as a pin.

  • Any portion of the opponent’s wrist to fingertips breaking the pin line (the top of the elbow pad) is constituted as a pin (parallel pin). 

     We reserve the right to make changes, as we see fit on any rules or regulations set forth, at our discretion. 

    We reserve the right to refuse any person/s from the World Series of Arm Wrestling due to violations of rules, past behavior, or belligerence.
